Vivienne Westwood Red Label Fall 2011
Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label collection is always out of left field. Never one to subscribe to trends, the queen of British punk showed a presentation filled to the brim with colorful characters, both on the runway and off.The designer showed an eccentric collection with mismatched seams, outrageous outerwear and accessories, and a beauty look so extreme that it was hard to tell that top tier models such as Jacquetta Wheeler and Alek Wek were beneath.
The inspiration was the Royal Family paired with Alice in Wonderland, and there were looks that, while varied, reflected the mixed pot of themes. There was plenty of knitwear from capes to cardigans as the designer is a proponent for the use of British wool. There were more minimal pieces that could easily be integrated into a more demure woman’s wardrobe but the majority of looks were to appease her massive client base. Westwood may not always please the critics, but at this place in her career, with a loyal and vigilant following, it really doesn’t matter.
